SCGS :: Pursuit of Personal Excellence (Self-respect and Self-excellence)::

Being beautiful means knowing your identity, having self-confidence, self-esteem and having self-respect. Different people of different walks of life have different perspectives of beauty. Some people believe that being beautiful is only being slim, having a good body shape and going on diets. Others think that muscles look good on them, and take steroids to gain muscles in a short time. These pills can be very dangerous to the health of people.

Everyone has to start somewhere, and starting somewhere. Is better than nothing. So it is time that we make a deal with ourselves and realize that there is no better time than now. To make the right choices. It is time to change our lifestyles, to adapt to feeling good about our lives and our beautiful bodies.

It is hard to have a wonderful and perfect body. Some are thin, some are fat, some are short and some are tall but all these people can be the same by believing that they have a perfect body. They can do that by eating healthy and less fattening food, exercising more and having enough rest.

We make choices to achieve one's objectives or targets for the task to be performed. The decision should also be governed by moral. Example: To make a decision of doing something that is right and not wrong or harmful, one should always do the right thing. When making a choice one must also consider the consequences for their choices.

How do we make choices?
How we make choices will depend on our own opinions. Some people may choose to follow their minds but some may choose to follow their heart. If you follow your mind, it is partially correct but is this what you really desire? Achieve personal goals or societal goals? Sacrifices must be made. But if you follow your heart, it is believed that it will lead you to long term success and you are determined to make the best of the choices made. Be passionate about your choice, choose the one that you feel confident about taking you along way.

Where does one get advice for making choices?
One gets advice from parents, friends or other close relatives. But ultimately, we should make our own decisions, because sometimes, others do not have the answers to our questions or problems.

::Protecting the Environment::

What is happening to the Earth?

Due to some climate changes, we now have global warming! Ever wondered what it is? Global warming is the increase of average temperatures of the Earth's surface air and oceans since the twentieth century and its projected continuation. Intergovernmental Panel on climate change (IPCC) claims that anthropogenic greenhouse gases are responsible for most of the observed temperature increase since the twentieth century, while natural phenomena such as solar variation and volcanoes created most of the warming. These basic conclusions have been endorsed by more than 40 scientific societies and academies of science, including all of the national academies of science.
Increasing global temperature will cause sea levels to rise and will change the amount and the pattern of precipitation. The continuing retreat of glaciers, permafrost and sea ice is expected, with the Arctic region being particularly affected. Other likely effects include the shrinking of the Amazon rainforests and the Boreal forests, increasing the intensity of extreme weather events, species extinction and changes in agricultural yields.

SCGSSCGS

Do you know which are the 5 most deadly effects of global warming? They are the spreading of diseases, warm waters and hurricanes, increased possiblities and intensity of droughts and heat waves, economic consequences and polar ice caps melting.

How can we can play our part?

We can conserve energy, water, reduce waste and garbage, improve air, water and soil qualities and protect important natural and cultural environments.

SCGSSCGS

How we can save these resources?

We could take public transport instead of taking our own car. Why is it important to save these resources? If we do not save these resources, soon, they will disappear from Mother Earth and we will not have any of these resources ever again. So, we must learn to save these resources. Conserving water is important as many people in the world do not have enough water for their needs, or have to walk long distances to find clean water. Here are some simple ideas to help you. You can take a few of your own clothes, books, CDs, DVDs, kitchen gadgets, computer gadgets-and ask yourself which of them you really need.

SCGSSCGS

What’s happening to our Earth?
Due to an aspect of climate change, we now have GLOBAL WARMING. Global warming leads to the rise in temperature which results in increased concentration of greenhouse gases. Factories and machines require carbon based fuel such as coal and oil which contribute to Global Warming. There are many causes which result in Global Warming, but the main cause is man made activities.

More about Global Warming……..
Is the Earth really getting hotter? The answer is yes!
It is actually caused by global warming, which is an increase in the temperature of the Earth’s atmosphere. Scientists believe that Global Warming is caused by people burning fossil fuels such as coal and oil. Gases such as carbon dioxide are produced during that process.

Have you ever wondered how hot our Earth has become?
Comparing the temperatures from the past 1000 years to the 1900s, scientists have found that the northern hemisphere have seen increases in temperature. Since 1961, the temperatures had suddenly started to rise. It was probably because the start of the Industrial Revolution, leading to the result of more fossil fuels being burnt. Global warming is a very serious problem to everyone, including plants. So, what can we do to help Mother Earth? We can………

1) Conserve energy

SCGS

Everyday, people in the world use lots of energy to cook food, keep warm, provide light and more. Some of them are using energy unnecessarily, causing the Earth to heat up. Therefore, we need to start conserving energy. By conserving energy, we can reduce the amount of greenhouse gases released and we can improve the environment of the world. One way is to turn off all electrical appliances when not in use.

SCGS

Another way is to use the fan instead of the air-conditioner.

2) Conserve water

SCGS

There is a limited amount of water on Earth--The only planet that supports life in our solar system. Many people do not have enough water to drink, yet there are still so many who waste our precious water. They do not see the importance of water, neither do they spare a thought for those who have to drink unclean water. How are we going to conserve water? We can use a mug when we brush our teeth and NOT leave the tap running. We can also collect rainwater to wash the toilets or mop the floor.

SCGS

3) Reduce Waste and Garbage

SCGS SCGS

Reducing Waste and Garbage simply means finding ways to reduce the amount of garbage, and also to reduce commercial and industrial waste. Waste materials include leftover food, glass, tins, plastics, papers and old clothes; as well as machines such as cars, computers and fridges that are thrown away. The world population is growing rapidly, and so is the amount of waste and garbage thrown away. Therefore, it is very important to reduce waste and garbage. This way, the Earth will not be polluted with plastic bags or other waste! One way to reduce waste and garbage is to reuse things that you want to throw away . Always remember to “reuse, reduce and recycle, (refuse), and most importantly, ‘remember’!”

4) Improve air, water and soil Quality

SCGS

Have you ever spared a thought for athletes? The answer is obvious—no! “Why do we have to spare a thought for athletes, anyway?” You may think this way, but no, instead of giving them a good condition, what all of us human beings are doing is polluting the air, water and soil! Athletes cannot perform their best if the quality of air is not good! One way to help them, and everybody, is to NOT litter any where, at anytime. By doing this, everyone will be in the pink of health, just like the colour of the background.

"Nobody wants to live in a polluted environment, especially plants!"
-SCGS 5C Team 6.2

We should not pollute the air.IT IS WRONG TO DO SO!

Our Advices:

SCGS

GO GREEN!

Say no to black, blue, yellow and all the other colours, go for green, the environmentally friendly colour!

SCGS

Mother Earth is "falling ill" and every soul is responsible for it. We humans must play a part, big or small, in protecting the environment, just like what one would do when someone falls ill. If we do not start now, the Earth will be too sick to survive. Let's start protecting the environment, Mother Earth, and everyone's home!

::Respect, Excellence and friendship:: Youth Olympic Games

The Value of Youth Olympic (YOG)

Singapore has been chosen to host the Youth Olympic Games(YOG) in 2010.

What are the values of the Youth Olympic Games Values?

Respect, Excellence and Friendship - these are the 3 basic values of olympism.

What do these values mean to us?

Respect is to feel or show regard for another with honour or esteem.
It is a willingness to show consideration or appreciation for other participants regardless of race, language or religion.

Excellence is when the participants strive their best to excel in their games.
It is also when the participants show good qualities in virtue such as faith, hope love, loyalty, temperance, courage, prudence, humility, trustworthiness and responsibility.

Friendship is to exhibit co-operative and supportive behaviour among the participants during games.
It is a relationship which involves mutual understanding, esteem and respect along with rendering service and encouragement to one another in times of need or crisis.
The participants will also engage in exchange of advice and sharing of their expertise generously and tactfully. Friendship is the desire what is best for one another - showing sympathy and empathy towards one another, sincerity in congratulating the winners, courage in pointing out the faults of opponents.

YOG Logo(Spirit Of Youth)
The Spirit Of Youth celebrates Singapore 2010 in an adventurous, open and fun way. It evokes the Singaporean's sense of confidence and progress.

Excellence

Did you know that there is a star in every apple? Cut it length wise, and you will see a star! From here, we can tell that everyone has a talent. As long as the 'apple' discovers the 'star' in it, they will be able to excel in it. Each and every one of the people on earth have their own special talent. Some natives can do well sports, such as soccer, weight lifting etc, while other people might be good it an academics such as Mathematics, Science etc, choir, gymnastic, dance or even drawing. Some citizens might even have a special talent of doing household chores, and yet have a very good career! So if you want to be brilliant, make sure you make sure you have found that unique talent in you before making an effort to excel in it. Commit to memory! Practice makes perfect!

Being outstanding need not only mean going on stage to collect all sorts of trophies and medals. Brilliance also depends on your character. Are you an angel or a devil? It all depends. A fantastically smart student could be out there with a beautiful body and is capable of doing work, but yet, she is mean, nasty, insulting and unkind. Thus, she would not be placed under the heading 'excellent'. An 'excellent' person should have the correct spirit and attitude. Read the story below on a girl called 'Joanne' to understand more about this value. We all deserve to learn from Joanne. Of course, not all obstacles in life can be accomplished successfully. But as long as you learn something, have fun, and experience something you have never done before, it doesn't really matter.

SCGS
SCGS

Friendship
Based on the picture above, the term 'friendship' briefly means a relationship with a good friends. Having friends is important. For example, going shopping alone and going shopping with a group of buddies makes a differance. You will find that doing things together with friends is much more enjoyable then doing things alone.

There is also another meaning of friendship. The word "Friendship" may also symbolize the feelings and behaviour of someone. For instance, I once had a friend called Lucy. Her father lost his job and her mother fell ill and was hospitalized. I knew that at that time, what she needed most was friendship and support. I lent her a sum of money and told her to settle her financial problems first. Then, I helped her to find a part-time job to earn more cash. When Lucy's problems were finally solved, she returned me the amount of money which she had loaned from me and thanked me profusely. It was then that I realised that that was what made a good friend.

A friend is one who brings out the best in me. So, cherish all friendships you have with your friends and buddies. Remember! A true friendship is never serene.

How Joanne faced her difficulties?

Hi! I am Joanne. Let me tell you a story of how I faced my difficulties. This story happened about one year ago when I was in Camp. That day, we had to climb a rock wall. I had never climbed a rock wall before. Looking at the rock wall made me scared. 'What if I didn't make it to the top?' I kept thinking. It was my first time climbing a rock wall. Also, I had a phobia of heights. When it was my turn, I put on my safety harness and took deep breaths. Then, I started to climb. I kept telling myself not to look down, and concentrate. When I was three-quarter to success, I realised that I was too short to reach out for the stencil above. "Just give up, Joanne!" A voice in my head piped up. But I insisted to keep going, after going this far. "GO JOANNE!" I could hear my friends chanting. I took a deep breath and reached out to the stencil on my left instead. Soon, I reached the top. "Falling!" I shouted. When I reached the ground, I was grinning from ear to ear. I made it! "Joanne, you were brilliant!" My trainer, Ester, praised me. It was definitely an unforgettable day for me.
If you were Joanne, would you give up after climbing three-quarter of the rock wall?

Respect

Self-respect, respecting the elderly, respecting a friend etc - these are different forms of respect. There are many ways to show respect. The students that we see in the picture above are saying the pledge. Notice that none of them are fidgeting or talking to one another. This is a way of showing respect for your country. Whenever your friend speaks to you in the middle of flag raising ceremony, ignore them. Talk to them only after the ceremony has completely ended.
There are many other customs that show respect. Letting the elderly start eating before any other family members start, greeting the someone when you meet them or simply listening when others are talking can also be a way of showing respect.
Showing respect to someone will make him or her have a good impression of you. Bear in mind, showing respect to yourself or others is important!

::Heroes and Heroines of Peace::

Jose Antonio Paez was the General in Chief of the army fighting Spain during the Venezuelan wars of indepndence.
He led Venezuela to independence and then became the President of Venzuela. Before that, it was part of the Gran Columbia. Jose was born in Curpa, in Venezuela. He was born into a not-so-well-off family. His father was a low level employee of the colonial government. As a boy, he was forced to work like a slave for a Negro. Sadly, at the age of 20, his father was already dead. Paez was married and earning a living by trading cattle.

Late in 1810, he joined a cavalry squadron, led by a former employer, set up with the purpose of fighting the colonial governemnt. In 1813, he asked for a leave from his squadron with the intent of setting and leading his own, which he did, joining the western republican army, with the rank of a Sergeant. Paez had an ingratiating personality which made him very much liked amongst those who knew him. And he was also looked up for to for his skills as a horseman and for his physical capabilities.

Although Jose struggled in his childhood and had to live many years without a father, he never really gave up. We all should learn from Jose, putting aside our own problems and helping the society. Venezuela still remembers and loves Jose till today for he gave his country independence. So the next time you fail in exams or are teased by others, remember Jose and DO NOT GIVE UP!!

Alyssa Ling is a pupil at Singapore Chinese Girls' School, from class 5G.
She was walking down the corridor one day when she noticed a student about to punch another student.

Alyssa was shocked and she dashed up to them and grabbed the arm of the girl who was about to hit the other student. The bully was startled and glared at Alyssa. However, Alyssa carefully explained the importance of peace to the girls. She told them that without peace, the world will be a horrible place. Hearing that, the bully stretched out her hand and sincerely said, "I am so sorry..." The girl smiled and forgave her.

This example on peace is just one of them. As you can see, as long as you do your best to preserve peace in school or neighbourhood, even if you are just a young student, the world will be a happier place to live in.

Remember the "cliched saying" PEACE BEGINS WITH ME!

SCGS

Peace is a term that most commonly refers to an absence of aggression, violence or hostility, but which also represents a larger concept wherein there are healthy or newly-healed interpersonel or international relationships, safety in matters of social or economic welfare, the acknowledgment of equality and fairness in political relationships and, in world matters, peacetime; a state of being absent of any war or conflict. Reflection on the nature of peace is also bound up with considerations of the causes for its absence or loss. Among these potential causes are: insecurity, social injustice, economic inequality, political and religious radicalism, and acute nationalism.

::Symbols of Peace in Olympic Games::

Olympic Flag:
The flag of the Olympic Games is made up of five interlocking rings, coloured blue, yellow, black, green, and red on a white flag. This was first designed in 1912 by Baron Pierre de Coubertin, the founder of the Olympic Games. The five rings represent passion, faith, victory, work ethic, and sportsmanship. The colors were selected as every nation had at least one of the colours on its nation’s flag.
SCGS
The Olympic Torch

Months before each game, the Olympic Torch is lit in Olympia in a ceremony that resembles old Greek rituals. A lady performer, acting as a priestess, lights a torch by placing it in a parabolic mirror which reflects the sun's rays, then lights the torch of the first relay bearer, starting the Olympic torch relay that would carry the flame to the host city's Olympic stadium, where it plays an important role in the opening ceremony.

::Fairplay::

Fairness means not cheating- sticking to the rules, not using unfair advantages, equal opportunites, considerate bahaviour, respect for the opponent and acceptance of others.

The most important principles about fair play:
1) Fair play is a form of human behaviour that is characterized by fairness towards everybody.
2) You need certain skills to play fairly, for example- attentiveness, honesty, self-confidence,and consideration. Fair play cannot be taught, but can be learned through examples.
3) What we do is not as important as how we do it.
4) People must to have a sense of responsibility.

Before a game:
1) Decide that you are going to be fair in the game and not intentionally hurt or offend the opponents in any way,

2) Look forward to the game instead of thinking of winning or losing- enjoy the game.

During the game:
1) Follow the rules- do not break them.

2) Do not argue with the referee.

3) Stay relaxed and be calm even if others are being rude to you.

4) Focus on the game - do not get distracted by the spectators.

After the game:
1) Enjoy winning and losing, if the opponents lose, encourage them to do better in the next game.

2) Always thank your teammates.

An interview with a teacher:
Q: What do you think fair play is?
A: It is not cheating.
Q: Have you ever experieced something where a situation where fair play was not present?
A: Yes. In the outside world, different people are treated differently. Bias exists.
Q: Do you think you play fair in sports?
A:Yes, I think so.
SCGS

Fair play is one of the important things in life. Without fair play, the world would be in chaos. There would be no peace. My group has learnt many things doing this website, now we want to share with you what we have learnt. We hope that everyone will have the knowledge of fair play and spread it to others.

::Fair play Acts in SCGS::

What is fair play?

In SCGS, fair play is important in all sports. Without fair play, there would be cheaters. An example of fair play is when people finish a game, and shake hands with each other, acknowledging that it was a good game. This is to show respect to the opponent.

This is an example of a fair play act:

Juliana squinted her eyes at Jane. It was sports day today and it was the finals for the 100 metre dash. They were competiting against each other. "Positions ready, get set, GO!" Juliana ran forward like a bullet train, she was in front and Juliana knew she was going to win first place. Overcomplacent, she slowed down. Suddenly, Jane ran past her at the speed of light. Juliana was furious as she tried to race up with Jane. Too late! Jane ran past the finishing line.

"First place for 100m dash, is Jane Koh, second place goes to Juliana Tan ......" Juliana was angry with herself for not winning the 100m dash, but she knew that nothing could change reality. Yesterday at school, she learnt about fair play and sportsmanship. Juliana learnt alot about it. She remembered one quote very clearly: "Losing the game doesn't mean it's the end of the world, it's about learning from your mistakes". Instead Juliana congratulated Jane for winning the 100m dash.

SCGS
Reflections:

Juliana was right not to make a fuss and instead congratualate Jane. Juliana doing that means that Juliana had good sportsmanship. Remember this quote of fair play and sportsmanship: "Losing the game dosn't mean it's the end of the world, it's about learning from your mistakes".
SCGS
Q: How did you feel after this incident?
A: I felt happy for doing the right thing.

Q: Are you going to display this kind of sportsmanship attitude again?
A: Definitnely!

Q: Would you like the other people around the world to follow your example?
A: Of course!!!

Q:Do you have any other message to share with us all?
A: Yes. Always play fair, do not cheat, especially in tests or major exams.

::Heart Health::

Why do we need to keep our hearts healthy?

Your heart is a precious organ and it is a source of life and vitality. Keeping it healthy means taking care of your body, mind and spirit. Eating a balanced diet, getting regular exercise and avoiding second-hand smoke are obvious must-dos for staying healthy.

The heart is a muscle which pumps blood through blood vessels to all cells in our bodies. Our hearts beat continually every day of our lives. Blood feeds and removes waste from the cells.

[Untitled] :: About our heart ::

1. Our hearts are about as big as our fist.
2. Our hearts are located in our chest, slightly to the left of the centre.
3. Our hearts beat about 90 times per minute at rest.
4. Arteries are the blood vessels that carry blood from the heart to the rest of my body.
5. Veins are the blood vessels that carry blood from the rest of the body to the heart.
To keep our hearts healthy we need to participate in physical activities and eat healthy foods everyday.

::Active Living::

Active Living means that you find ways to be physically active everyday.

Examples are taking the stairs at work or turning off the TV, going for a walk outdoors or going dancing. There are many reasons why active living is a good idea for you and your family. Its fun to be together as a family and with friends.Kids who exercise regularly are able to focus better in school. Being active can help reduce your chances of getting various diseases such as heart disease, arthritis, and diabetes. Along with eating healthily physical activity helps you mantain a healthy weight.

My First ever Physical Activity

I started to learn how to ice-skate when I was 9. In 2008, I was horrible when i first stepped on the ice, but now, I am much better and I am having lots of fun doing it. It is my favourite sport. When I ice-skate, it requires lots of balance and determination. After you ice-skate, you can feel more refreshed and at the same time your legs get much stronger. So, I always try and keep ice-skating as my active sport.

I first learnt how to swim when i was 9. I take swimming lessons every Sunday. At first, I hated swimming lessons but after encouragement from my friends and parents, I started to love swimming slowly. Swimming makes your limbs strong and you get much muscles. After you swim, you feel refreshed and cold.......It is a good way to have fun and excercise at the same time! After I had gotten used to swimming, I made swimming my active sport and up to now, I still enjoy my ACTIVE SPORT!

I first learnt how to bowl when I was 6 years old. I did not take bowling lessons but I learnt from my Dad. After much encouragement from my parents and peers, I finally learnt how to polish my skill and now, I still enjoy bowling alot. Once, I took part in a small competition and I won 4th place! When you bowl, your limbs get stronger and you feel very happy. Now, I regard bowling as my active sport!
